More Harm Than Good? McKinney Dentist Cautions About Brushing Right After a Meal
It is extremely important to brush your teeth at least twice a day in order to help maintain good oral hygiene. It is also important to take into consideration WHEN we should brush our teeth. A common misconception is that it is beneficial to brush your teeth right after a meal. However, that may actually do you more harm than good.
Your mouth is subject to changes in pH especially after eating an acidic meal. An increase in acidity can actually result in the demineralization of your enamel, a hard protective coating on your teeth that helps you decrease the risk of cavities. As a result, your enamel becomes soft and bacteria have a better chance of attacking your healthy teeth.
How can I protect my enamel?
- Wait 30 minutes after a meal and then brush
- Balance the acidic food consumption by eating or drinking something more alkaline in pH such as milk.
- Drinking water can also help minimize the acidity.
- Avoid drinking sodas that contain phosphoric acid that increase the demineralization process
